Simultaneous intepreting
Sitting in a soundproof booth, an interpreter listens to a speaker via headphones and speaks at the same time rendering the speaker's utterances in the target language. The audience can choose which language version of the event they will follow: the original (whatever language is spoken on the floor) or the interpreting (via the earphones). Advantages: simultaneous interpreting does not impact the duration of the talk/ event, it is possible to provide two or more language versions of the program offered to the audience at the same time. Specialist equipment (booth, interpreter consoles, receiver headsets) is required. Due to the nature of the job, which involves constant attention focus and uninterrupted speaking, simultaneous interpreters work in pairs.
Consecutive interpreting
A speaker and an interpreter take turns talking. In consecutive interpreting, an interpreter sits or stands near the speaker (eye contact is recommended), listens and takes notes. A speaker divides their speech into chungs (length to be determined with an interpreter prior to the talk) and is required to pause to allow interpretation. Consecutive interpreting doubles the time needed for a talk/ an event, i.e. if a speaker delivers a 20-minute-talk and uses consecutive interpreting, they should be allowed 40-minute slot during a conference. No specialist equipment is needed.
Whispered interpreting (chuchotage)
Whispered interpreting is a limited version of simultaneous interpreting for a single (to a few) listeners. An interpreter sits near the listener and renders the speaker's utterances in the target language using their normal voice at a low volume. In Life Sciences field, whispered interpreting and consecutive interpreting are often two facets of the same combined assignment - a foreign language speaking guest follows the event owing to whispered interpreting and communicates with the audience delivering their presentation/ talk via consecutive interpreting.
